Hypnotherapy & NLP
Despite having an interesting reputation, hypnotherapy and hypnosis have been practiced for hundreds of years, with formal records of hypnosis being used for medical treatment dating back to the late 1700s. An Austrian physician called Franz Mesmer ‘mesmerised’ patients into a “mesmeric coma” to perform treatments. ‘Mesmerised’ may still be part of modern society’s vocabulary, but you will be relieved to know that “mesmeric comas” are not.
We’re all familiar with hypnosis being used for entertainment purposes in stage shows; where people have been chosen to play a part in a performance and don’t want to be the kill-joy who doesn’t play along – even if it means they have to cluck like a chicken... As hard as it might be to believe, those people still have a choice as to whether they are going to be susceptible to the entertainer’s suggestions or not (the entertainer is pretty swift at encouraging those who won’t be susceptible back to their seats...)!
